The anti friction performance of lubricating grease in sliding bearings

There is no clear consensus on the lubrication mechanism of lubricating grease, and early views believed that only the base oil played a lubricating role in lubricating grease, while the thickening agent only played a storage role. However, different conclusions have been drawn from studies under different experimental conditions. This article describes the anti friction effect of lubricating grease in sliding bearings. Researchers conducted experiments using soap based grease in bronze steel sliding bearings under a load of 3.781 kN at 37.8 ℃ to investigate the effect of grease composition on friction reduction. The friction torque of sliding bearings lubricated with various grease samples was measured at different journal speeds, and the sharp increase in friction torque was used as a sign of transition to mixed lubrication boundary lubrication.

The lower the shaft neck speed or the smaller the friction torque at a certain speed during the transition, the better the anti friction properties of the lubricating grease. The test results show that soap not only acts as an oil reservoir in the lubrication of the lubricating grease, but also as a friction reducer. Soap based lubricating grease has a lower friction coefficient than its base oil.

The influence of soap based grease composition on friction reducing properties includes:

1. The influence of base oil viscosity: an increase in base oil viscosity leads to a decrease in friction torque;

2. The influence of soap concentration: Under boundary lubrication conditions, an increase in soap concentration leads to a decrease in friction torque;

3. The influence of thickening agent type: The influence of thickening agent type on friction was studied by researchers through experiments using lubricating grease made from the same base oil thickened with different metal soaps in bronze steel bearings.

As a result, in the low-speed region of boundary lubrication, the lubricating grease is better than the base oil, and the friction torque of various lubricating greases varies greatly. For example, lubricating grease thickened with lithium soap has much lower friction torque than aluminum based grease, with calcium based and sodium based grease in the middle. These results can serve as representatives of the range of variation for other types of lubricants. In addition, similar results were obtained from bearing tests using steel to steel or Babbitt alloy to steel.
